Shanghai - The Bund & Yu Yuan

Shanghai não foi um destino escolhido ao acaso nesta viagem. Principalmente para passar o Natal. O meu avô nasceu aqui, tendo ido mais tarde viver para Macau. Aliás, foi com grande surpresa que a minha mãe me disse que não só o meu avô tinha nascido em Shanghai (isso eu já sabia), mas que parte dos seus antepassados tinham nascido e vivido lá! 

E assim, passear pelo The Bund no dia de Natal teve um significado especial para mim. The Bund é talvez a área mais marcante da antiga International Settlement, onde inicialmente se instalaram os Ingleses, após a Primeira Guerra do Ópio, e posteriormente se viriam a instalar outro povos europeus (entre eles, os antepassados do meu avô), com excepção dos Franceses, que tinham uma parte da cidade distinta, a French Concession.

Shanghai was not a randomly chosen destination on this trip. Specially to spend Christmas. My grandfather was born here, and later went to live in Macao. Indeed, it was with great surprise that my mother told me that not only my grandfather was born in Shanghai (this I already knew), but that some of his ancestors were born and lived there!

And so, strolling in The Bund area on Christmas Day had a special meaning for me. The Bund area is perhaps the most striking of the former International Settlement, where initially settled the British after the First Opium War, and subsequently were to install other Europeans (among them, the ancestors of my grandfather), with the exception of French, who had a distinct part of the city, the French Concession.

Um pouco mais abaixo, numa parte da antiga cidade de Shanghai, fica Yu Garden ou Yu Yuan, um jardim construído inicialmente durante a Dinastia Ming.

A little further down, a part of the old city of Shanghai, Yu Garden is or Yu Yuan, a garden originally built during the Ming Dynasty.

E à volta do Yu Yuan, abundam casas de chá, lojinhas de lembranças e restaurantes típicamente chineses. Entrámos num deles para espreitar a comida. Consegui tirar algumas fotos agora perguntar o que era... nem pensar! Eu diria que a comunicação foi o que correu pior nesta viagem. (ATENÇÃO! Algumas das próximas imagens podem deixar-vos sem apetite. Ou talvez não...)

And around the Yu Yuan, there are a lot of teahouses, souvenir shops and typical Chinese restaurants. We've entered into one of them to have a look at the food. I did manage to take some pictures, but when it came to ask them what it was it was absolutely impossible! I would say that communication was the worst part on this trip. (WARNING! Some of the next images may leave you with no appetite. Or maybe not...)
